Construction Labourer

You bring block, mortar, reinforcement and formwork panels to the working face, mix mortar in the pan and keep the gang supplied so the wall never waits. On concrete days you help set and strip formwork, tie spacers and vibrate the pour with the gang leader watching. The site is swept and the waste sorted into skips at the end of every day, and the tools are counted back into the container. The shift is 07:00-15:30, Monday to Friday.

Labourers who learn the formwork panels move to the concrete gang, and those who take to the trowel are sent to the bricklaying course at the firm's cost.

An open site with mud in spring, dust in summer and constant machine noise. Lifting is heavy and repeated, and a helmet, vest, gloves and safety shoes are compulsory and issued by the contractor.
